英語(yǔ)語(yǔ)音的最小單位是音素。例如 /bi:/ 是由 /b/ 和 /i:/ 兩個(gè)音素構(gòu)成的。音素分兩大類:元音和輔音。它們?cè)谝艄?jié)中各司其職;音節(jié)主要以元音為中心，元音前后可有一個(gè)或多個(gè)輔音。英語(yǔ)有48個(gè)音素，其中元音音素20個(gè)，輔音音素28個(gè)。要掌握好英語(yǔ)語(yǔ)音，就得學(xué)會(huì)48個(gè)音素的正確發(fā)音和元音音素的兩種基本語(yǔ)調(diào)，即升調(diào)和降調(diào)。在學(xué)習(xí)過(guò)程中，要特別注意本族語(yǔ)的語(yǔ)音和英語(yǔ)語(yǔ)音不可相互代替。否則，將會(huì)給以后的學(xué)習(xí)造成很大的困難。記錄和描寫音素的符號(hào)是音標(biāo)。
